The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council has become the first Native American Tribe in the US state of Wisconsin to ratify a treaty presented by the Tribal Internet Gaming Alliance (TIGA) organisation.
The treaty is an inter-governmental agreement between Tribes that wish to work together in order to develop a single platform online gaming business.
The model is based on Tribal sovereignty and building liquidity on existing resources.
Lac du Flambeau said the treaty does not bind it to any Tribe or business venture, but instead creates an opportunity for Tribal Nations to work together and address potential legislative or regulatory issues.
The Tribe can choose to opt out of the treaty at any time.
“We asked our Gaming Commission to do the homework on this, and they and our attorney found minimal risk in our moving forward,” Tribal president Tom Maulson said. “We want to be at the forefront of online gaming, and this is another step to advance that.”
