American Express To Sponsor Riot Games

Multinational financial services corporation American Express has agreed a sponsorship deal with Riot Games, developer of online games such as League of Legends.

According to marketing news website TheDrum.com, prepaid debit cards have been created featuring illustrations of characters from the popular game. Holders of these cards will be able to collect ‘Riot Points’ to be used to buy characters and other extras in the games.

Users will receive 1,000 points automatically when they first sign up and an additional 1,000 points after loading $20 onto it. Points can also be earned for the first 10 purchases made with the card, while 10,000 points will be awarded the first time a card is linked to an account.

The prepaid cards, which will be aimed at young adults, will not require a credit check, activation fee or minimum balance, but will instead be loaded with a cardholder’s own money.

A 30-second advert has been created to explain how the card system will work, while digital banners adverts will appear on the League of Legends Championship series website from August 14.
