Tokyo eases pandemic alert. On June 11th, Tokyo relaxed its restrictions derived from the Covid-19 pandemic. This relaxation allows pachinko parlours, karaoke outlets, bars, game centres and Internet cafes without personal attendant to reopen its businesses.
Live music clubs and food and beverage establishments employing personal attendants, considered to be high risk, may also reopen from 19 June. This is allowed as long as the establishments provide measures to prevent the infection. However, most pachinko parlors in the Tokyo metropolitan area ignored these steps and have already resumed business.
The Toyoukyo (Tokyo Pachinko and Pachislot Cooperative Association) lost control when more pachinko parlours resumed operations in June. The association stated that the reopening of the parlours are “at the discretion of management of each branch.”
Pachinko is a Japanese mechanical game used in arcades and more commonly used as a gambling device.
