Senior official says digital Yen now ‘top priority’ for Japan Central Bank. Japanese news outlet The Asahi Shimbun, reports that Takeshi Kimura, departmental director-general, described the digital yen as a chief concern for the central bank.
The BoJ has been experimenting with a digital currency in the central bank (CBDC), but has said no plans to introduce one so far.
The government said this month it would consider the introduction of a digital yen as part of this year’s legislative agenda.
In June, a proposal from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party reported that China’s global lead in CBDC growth might become a challenge to national security.
As of February, senior Japanese lawmakers have called on the government to step up study.
