Irish bookmaker and online gaming operator Paddy Power has confirmed an application for a gambling licence in the US state of New Jersey, which is expected to legalise gambling in November.

The Irish Independent newspaper said that Paddy Power has joined the likes of US casino companies MGM, Caesars Entertainment and Boyd Gaming in bidding for a licence. The majority of these have also partnered with online operators and gaming software firms to strengthen their bids.

Paddy Power, the company’s communications director and son of co-founder David Power, said that although a bid has been made, the firm had not decided its level of involvement in the New Jersey project.

He added, “We want to make sure that we’re in place and ready. We have applied for the licence to be in there, and we’ll then see what is viable. We’re putting ourselves in position.”

The company already has a presence on the continent, with Eamon Toland serving as president of gambling and casinos in North America.

Paddy Power was also awarded an online gaming licence in Nevada last year, but has not progressed with operations in the state yet.
