Nintendo Shuts PlayVS Collegiate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate League

Nintendo shuts PlayVS Collegiate Super Smash Bros. Nintendo allegedly asked PlayVS not to offer Super Smash Bros Ultimate as part of their collegiate sports league. PlayVS had initially intended to launch Smash Ultimate during the Spring 2021 season.

St. Clair College professor and varsity esports director Shaun Byrne shared the announcement from PlayVS’ Discord server on December 18. According to the announcement, PlayVS dropped Ultimate “at the request of the publisher, who wants to wait to restart their College initiatives at a later date.”

Many members of the competitive Super Smash Bros. community can find this language painfully familiar. In the past, Nintendo reportedly agreed to start a Smash circuit with Twitch, only to postpone the process and prevent any third party circuits from forming. As a result, many Smash group members claim that Nintendo does not necessarily plan to “restart” a college league other than PlayVS.
