The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has warned that citizens living near the state’s border may have to temporarily move if they wish to participate in online gambling when it launches on November 26.
According to the NJ.com website, a key aspect of the law legalising internet gambling is that all activity takes place within the state’s borders.
To comply with this, technology firms working with New Jersey casinos have installed ‘digital fences’ just inside the state’s border to stop citizens in non-regulated neighbour states from accessing online gambling services.
The in-state fencing will mean some areas of New Jersey will be no-play zones from which gamblers will have to temporarily move from in order to access online gambling services.
Geolocation providers have not disclosed the exact location of the no-play zones, with such areas likely to vary from provider to provider.
“Unfortunately for some people, there may not be sufficient verification that they are in New Jersey, even if they are, and they’ll be denied,” New Jersey’s DGE’s director, David Rebuck, said.
State regulators and technology operators will monitor usage areas during a five-day soft launch period that will begin this Thursday, one week before the full service is due to launch in the state.
