Mayor of London Vows to Ban Gambling Adverts on the Tube

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has pledged to ban gambling adverts from the tube if he is re-elected next month.

The Mayor’s election manifesto has been released and within it, Khan has said he would like to remove adverts conisdered more harmful from the tube.

Khan has already banned body-shaming adverts and in 2018 he removed all ads on the Transport for London (TFL) network which showcased foods high in fat, salt and sugar.

His recent manifesto said this would now be extended to gambling ads that can be harmful to travelling Londoners.

The manifesto read: “Given the devastating way gambling addiction can destroy lives and families, I’ll instruct TFL to bring forward plans to extend the ban to harmful gambling advertisements on the network.”

Recently, sports betting advertisement and sponsors came into the spotlight with people suggesting football clubs weren’t helping the matter of problem gambling by having sponsors that promote such activities.

Wider gambling and sponsorship is a central theme in the ongoing UK gambling review, with the Government and Gambling Commission reviewing the 2005 Gambling Act and analysing the relationship between spots and betting.
