OneCoin was founded in Bulgaria by Ruja Ignatova in 2014. The firm adopted the usual layout, but with a cryptocurrency twist, of a multilevel marketing scheme. OneCoin claimed to be the next Bitcoin, but it was not supported by a blockchain or a network. OneCoin continued to be popular, encouraging a ‘us vs. them’ mindset, despite many warnings from insiders of the crypto industry and government agencies.
McAdam, who started a support group for OneCoin victims, said she and her friends and family invested and lost over 250,000 euros ($298,800) before she learned its server was not a blockchain and could not create crypto.
On May 7, Ignatova was charged with wire fraud, securities fraud , and money laundering, but since 2017, she has not been seen. In March, her brother, Konstantin Ignatova, an executive at OneCoin, was charged with the same. Since then, he has decided to testify against his sister. Investors sued OneCoin for fraud, claiming up to $5 billion in damages.
