The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, otherwise known as BaFin, announced on Thursday that is has appointed Elisabeth Roegele as the Deputy President of BaFin. She will act as the permanent deputy for Felix Hufeld, who is the President of the German financial regulatory authority.
Roegele’s new role will be effective from August 1, 2018. The position of Deputy President has been vacant since Karl-Burkhard Caspari retired in 2015. He had held the position for thirteen years. Roegele was appointed by the Federal Ministry of Finance, following the recommendation of Hufeld.
Roegele has been with the financial authority for five years. Her current position is the Chief Executive Director of the watchdog. She first joined the regulator in 2004, where she worked as the Head of Section for Ad Hoc Disclosure. Here she dealt with directors’ dealings, insider lists, and stock exchange issues. Roegele held this position for two years.
In 2016, she left the German watchdog to work at DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale, the securities firm of the German Savings Bank Finance Group. At the firm, she was the General Counsel and Head of The Corporate Center for Legal Affairs. Roegele worked with the company for nine years before returning to BaFin in 2015.
Roegele’s career before BaFin
Before this, for four years, Roegele worked at Börse Stuttgart, a stock exchange in Germany. It is the second largest in the country and the ninth largest in Europe. Here she was the Deputy Chairperson of the Baden-Wuerttembergische securities firm. From May 2001 she was appointed as a member of the management board.
Roegele has also worked at the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development in the Exchange Supervisory Office. At the company, she monitored the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and Eurex Deutschland. Between 1995 to 1996 she was also an Expert Legal Adviser for Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall.
