Gambling Crackdown Imminent In Bulgaria Top Tax Man To Head Gambling Commission

Bulgaria appoints former Deputy Director of National Tax Agency, Alexander Georgiev, as head of State Commission on Gambling.

Former Deputy Director of Bulgaria’s National Tax Agency, Alexander Georgiev, has been appointed as the head of the State Commission on Gambling (SCG).

The development was announced by the country’s Ministry of Finance and signed off by the Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov. Former head of the SCG, Maria Filipova has been appointed as deputy chairman of the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC), and is now in charge of the Investment Activity Supervision Division.

The shuffle comes just over a year after Goranov fires Ohnemir Mitev as chairman of the SCG, in a move widely assumed to be due to media reports accusing him of failing to curb excessive gambling advertising on Bulgarian television.

A report, published by the Ministry of Finance, identified failings in attempts to control Bulgaria’s gambling industry, leading to new rules being introduced in February 2019.
