Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says the network is on the verge of 100X scaling with the release of its layer-two solution coming in the near future.
Speaking on the Tim Ferriss Podcast, Buterin said Optimism is launching its mainnet soon, which would give users access to long-awaited layer-two solutions for scaling.
Buterin said: “Rollups are coming very soon. We’re fully confident that by the time that we need any more scaling than that, sharding will have already been ready for a long time by then.”
Rollups allow transactions to be bundled and stored on designated sidechains, thereby easing the burden of ethereum’s network activity and increasing the protocol’s scalability. Buterin’s comments come in the wake of rising gas fees on Ethereum’s network, forcing certain crypto projects to look elsewhere for a native blockchain protocol.
Buterin said rollups would potentially increase ethereum’s scalability by 100x, giving users reason to celebrate in the interim before the release of sharding.
He continued: “The thing to remember is that if you have rollups, but you do not have sharding, you still have 100X factor scaling, right? You still have the ability for the blockchain to go up to somewhere between 1,000 and 4,000 transactions a second, depending on how complex these transactions are.”
