Deepdotweb reports that Cannabis Road has “officially been robbed of around $100,000 USD” in bitcoins (200 BTC), emptying its wallet.
Cannabis Road is an online darknet marketplace dedicated to Cannabis, themed after Silk Road.
The operator, codenamed “Crypto”, noticed that their wallet balance was zero. Initially thinking there must have been some mistake, he noticed they had been robbed 15 minutes earlier, with 200 BTC sent to this address. It is unknown how the coins were accessed.
The above information pops up when trying to visit the site (possible only with specialized software). The operator ends off:
“I don’t know if Cannabis Road will continue to exist or not at this point, because there may be no reasonable way for us to recover from this. But now I know how Defcon felt, because I know a substantial number of you will be pointing the finger at myself, Crypto.
I am deeply sorry that I have failed you as a developer and a leader, and if I can figure out how this happened, maybe you will find it in your hearts to move past this and help us bring Cannabis Road back to life once again.
If not, it has been an honor serving you all.”
The site was already hacked earlier this year in its early development stages, around the same time of the Silk Road 2.0 hacking in which $2.7 million in bitcoins were stolen.
Unlike other hackings over the months, it is safe to assume that the authorities have not be contacted to investigate.
