UK-based esports organisation Fnatic has acquired an Indian PUBG Mobile team, and has revealed plans to establish a facility in India.
XSpark, an India-based team competing in the mobile version of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG), was acquired by Fnatic for an undisclosed sum.
But, speaking to Spiel Times, division director at Fnatic, Victor Bengtsson, revealed big plans, saying:
“For the initial months, we’ll focus on the sports side and content. Over time, we are looking to set up a gaming facility and staff up so that all the fans and gamers in India can get the full Fnatic experience that they deserve, in terms of products, experiences, and of course content.”
Regarding the acquisition, Fnatic’s Chief Gaming Officer, Patrik Sättermon, told AFK Gaming:
“It’s been a long term dream and goal to enter India. We’ve been exploring the market as well as meeting with players, organizations and game developers to understand how the market is moving and where the opportunities lie. With Team X and PUBG Mobile we have a great opportunity as they are a pro team, who are not just the best in India but also are international contenders.”
According to Tencent, free-to-play PUBG Mobile has now been downloaded over 400 million times globally, and boats an incredible 50 million daily active users – so the potential value of popular and capable PUBG Mobile teams, especially in the rapidly growing Asian market, is clear.
