UKGC: Enrolment In Gamstop Self-exclusion Scheme Mandatory From 31st March

The UK Gambling Commission has announced it is now compulsory for all UK gambling operators to participate in the Gamstop self-exclusion scheme.

Gamstop, which was launched by the Remote Gambling Association in 2017, gives players the ability to self-exclude from all participating online operators. From 31st March 2020, all UK operators will be required to participate.

Though most UK operators are already enrolled in the scheme, CEO of the UKGC, Neil McArthur, said making it mandatory would make the coverage comprehensive. Explaining the reason for the new rule, he said:

“We welcome the fact Gamstop has got to this stage in its development and encourage it to continue to improve its offer, particularly in relation to preventing those who have self-excluded being targeted by direct marketing.

“Operators must do everything they can to minimize the risk of gambling related harm. That is why we expect the industry to create safe products, know their customers, understand what they can afford to gamble with and identify when they are experiencing harm and step in.

“It is also vital people experiencing gambling harm are able to access the support or treatment they need. This forms part of our ongoing work with our partners to implement the National Strategy for Reducing Gambling Harms.”
